๐Ÿ”„ How VoIP 9-1-1 Differs from Traditional E911

Voice2Net offers a form of 9-1-1 service that is similar to traditional 9-1-1 but has important differences. With traditional E911, your call goes directly to the nearest emergency response centre and your address is automatically displayed. With Voice2Net's 9-1-1 service, your call is first routed to a national emergency call centre. The operator will confirm your location and then transfer your call to the appropriate local emergency response centre.

You should be prepared to confirm your address and callback number with the operator. Do not hang up unless told to do so. If disconnected, dial 9-1-1 again immediately.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Using a Mobile App or Softphone Remotely

If you use the Voice2Net mobile app (Ringotel) or a softphone from a location other than your registered address, your 9-1-1 call will still be routed to the national emergency response centre. Emergency personnel will have your registered address on file โ€” but that may not be where you actually are. You must tell the operator your current location clearly.

๐Ÿ“‹ Keeping Your Address Current

Your 9-1-1 dialing service is activated automatically when you subscribe to Voice2Net. You must ensure your registered address is always current. You are required to update your address if you:

  • โ†’ Move your device to a different location
  • โ†’ Travel within Canada with your phone adapter
  • โ†’ Add a new line to your account
  • โ†’ Move permanently to a new address

Use the address portal on this page, or dial 922 from your Voice2Net phone to verify your current registered address.

โœˆ๏ธ Travelling with Your Adapter

Unlike traditional phone lines, Voice2Net service is portable โ€” it works anywhere with a quality high-speed internet connection in Canada or the USA. Because Voice2Net uses your registered address to route 9-1-1 calls, you must update your address whenever you travel with your phone adapter. Use the portal on this page to make a temporary address change when away from home.

When 9-1-1 Dialing Will Not Function

  • During a power outage at your location
  • If your broadband internet connection is disrupted or unavailable
  • If your ISP's service is interrupted
  • If your Voice2Net account is suspended or terminated

In any of these situations, 9-1-1 will not work through your Voice2Net service. Consider keeping a charged mobile phone available as a backup for emergencies.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Inform All Household or Office Members

You are responsible for informing all household residents, guests, employees, and any other persons who may use your Voice2Net service of the important differences and limitations of VoIP 9-1-1 dialing compared to traditional E911 service as described above.
